Clary Fray is just an ordinary girl, or so she is led to believe, that accidentally uncovers a hidden world. One day at Pandemonium (a club in New York City) she spots two mysterious figures following some kids towards the back. They are in all black, tattooed all over, and have strange weapons in their hands. With curiosity overpowering her, Clary follows them and witnesses a murder. The weird thing is that the dead body vanishes into thin air! She knows she should have called the police, but that wouldn't have worked since the murderers were invisible to everyone except her. These mysterious people explain themselves as shadowhunters or a group of people that are trying to rid the world of demons. They explain that she has the sight and when her mother disappears, Clary wonders if it has something to do with this new world she has fallen upon.
