The Bomb by Theodore Taylor

In this book the people of Bikini Atoll have just heard of the nuclear bomb during World War II. After the World War ends the Americans come to Bikini Atoll to use the lagoon for a nuclear testing sight. The people of Bikini decide to let the Americans do their tests because they have been promised that they can return to their island within several years. Only a couple of natives know the truth. One native Sorry decides to protest against the bomb being dropped. His plan is to stop the Americans by painting a canoe all red and row it six miles away from the bomb site and stop their canoe there. Sorry hopes that the plane dropping the bomb will stop and move away from Bikini Atoll. As he arrives there he realizes that they will not be looking at him just at the boat.
