Oak Grove is a high and dry town with a small population and most people liked it that way, in fact almost all dreaded and feared water because of the tragic floods in previous years. Martha glimmer lives with her father, her mother passed away, and she on the other hand hated the fact that it never rained. Martha's friends Trevor and Eli McGill were different in a weird way. The McGill boys were adopted, and they had a birth defect which is that both of them have webbed toes and hands. These boys also did not enjoy the dry environment they lived in.
One day after deciding how tired they were of the same thing happening everyday with a neighbor, Hidly Swoon, hitting on Martha's father and sitting on the garage roof. Martha and the brothers decided to head East towards the ocean and so, Martha packed some food and one pair of clothes and snuck out her window leaving a note. Heading to the ocean will take a while so after going about 8 miles they stop to rest for the nite. Martha awakes to the many noises of the forest they lay in. A branch falls atop her arm and crushes it braking her arm. They head back but the weather takes an unexpected turn for the worse and their adventure may not have such a happy ending after all.
